Mexico, officially known as the United Mexican States, is located in the southern part of North America. Spanning 1,972,550 square kilometers (761,610 square miles), it is the 13th largest country in the world by area. With a population nearing 130 million, Mexico is the 10th most populous country and has the largest Spanish-speaking population globally. It is a constitutional republic made up of 31 states and Mexico City, the capital and largest city, which ranks among the most populous metropolitan areas in the world. Mexico shares land borders with the United States to the north, and Guatemala and Belize to the southeast. It also has maritime borders with the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Caribbean Sea to the southeast, and the Gulf of Mexico to the east.

Mexico is a newly industrialized and developing country with the 12th-largest economy in the world by nominal GDP and purchasing power parity (PPP). It ranks first in the Americas and seventh globally in the number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. As one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries, Mexico holds the fifth spot in terms of natural biodiversity. A major tourist destination, it was the sixth most-visited country in 2022, attracting 42.2 million international visitors. Mexico’s large economy, significant population, cultural influence, and progress in democratization have established it as a regional and middle power, and it is increasingly seen as an emerging global power. Despite notable political and economic advancements in recent decades, the country continues to face challenges, including social inequality, poverty, systemic corruption, and widespread crime.
