India, officially known as the Republic of India (ISO: Bhārat Gaṇarājya), is a country located in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by area and, as of June 2023, the most populous country in the world. Since gaining independence in 1947, India has also been the world’s largest democracy. Bordered by the Indian Ocean to the south, the Arabian Sea to the southwest, and the Bay of Bengal to the southeast, India shares land borders with Pakistan to the west, China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north, and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. The Indian Ocean is near Sri Lanka and the Maldives, while the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have maritime borders with Thailand, Myanmar, and Indonesia.
