Bulgaria, officially known as the Republic of Bulgaria, is a country located in Southeast Europe, occupying the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. It lies directly south of the Danube River and west of the Black Sea. The country shares borders with Greece and Turkey to the south, Serbia and North Macedonia to the west, and Romania to the north. Bulgaria spans an area of 110,994 square kilometers (42,855 square miles), making it the sixteenth-largest country in Europe. Its capital and largest city is Sofia, with other major cities including Plovdiv, Varna, and Burgas.
