Republic of Angola
Angola, officially the Republic of Angola, is a country located on the west-central coast of Southern Africa. It is the second-largest Portuguese-speaking nation in terms of both area and population, and the seventh-largest country in Africa. Angola is bordered by Namibia to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Zambia to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It also has an exclave province, Cabinda, which shares borders with both the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The capital and largest city is Luanda.
Angola has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era. Its development as a nation-state can be traced back to the Kingdom of Kongo. The Kingdom of Kongo became prosperous and influential by engaging in the Atlantic slave trade with the Portuguese Empire. Portuguese explorers first made contact with Kongo in 1483, leading to the establishment of coastal settlements and trading posts.
The abolition of the slave trade in the 19th century significantly disrupted Kongo's economy, which was heavily dependent on the trade. Over time, European settlers moved into Angola's interior. The Portuguese colony, which eventually became modern-day Angola, did not reach its current borders until the early 20th century.
